Each week I learn something (if not lots) about my new camera and how to use it. I learn about the way I shoot and how to improve. This week I decided to get the “self-portrait-challenge” out of the way and learned a ton about how my clients feel behind the camera. I actually think it was the most enlightening challenge yet. Not only did I become disturbingly familiar with my own face, but was also able to play around with the idea of making a portrait flattering. Since the photos were of me, selfishly I was going for the most flattering portrait. It was very interesting to say the least and has changed my perspective. Here are some of my favorites…
Ps. I love my new video light. It made for this perfect warm glow, woot!

Awww Shoot - Wedding Etsy Find
Most of the weddings I see are beautiful, classy, feminine, etc. The inspiration varies from super traditional, to modern, chic and the the ever-so-popular vintage. I personally am a huge fan of all of those, but love when there is a not-so-girly, funkdified twist. It’s really fun to shoot details that the groomsmen are actually excited about.
These ties are the perfect example of that. They add a masculine, funky, and hip touch that am sure most guys would be happy to sport. Wouldn’t they compliment a group of James Dean looking hotties?
Happy Friday!

This photo was taken from Etsy.com, here is the listing.
February 5, 2010 - 4:58 pm - I L.O.V.E it!!!!! might have to buy one for myself just because!
My New Year’s Resolutions
I have a new found appreciation for anyone being filmed on anything live. Today I explained a few of my new year’s resolutions for my first ever video blog post from my new Ustream account. Ustream videos are recorded live, meaning there are no edits or changes once its been recorded. It’s really fun, but definitely something that will take some getting used to. I would actually challenge everyone to do this. I’ve learned a lot about myself even after making just one video.
Ok now I am going to watch all the experts on live taping at the Grammy’s, yay!
*Please note* - again, because it’s live I couldn’t cut the ending. I thought I could, but no :) I apologize for the the awkwardness, but it adds a little character. Actually it just makes me laugh really hard.
February 25, 2010 - 4:20 pm - YAY!!! Video blogging Emily! So... it is almost three months in... how are yo doing with those resolutions? I don't think I've read a book in 10 years... I should try that some day.
February 25, 2010 - 4:44 pm - Thanks Lan! Yeah, books are cool, especially on tape :) I cant wait to video blog more.
Kanieka and Tyrone - Getty Engagement Session Photos - Los Angeles
Kanieka and Tyrone are the not only the type of clients I live for, they are also the type of friends most would die for. Amanda and I met them at my place so we could drive together up to the Getty for their engagement session. Our conversation was literally like conversations I have with old friends. Kanieka is the sweetest! Tyrone absolutely cracks me up.
When we started the session, Kanieka was a little nervous, especially to show off her top model pose (seen below). Tyrone knew exactly what to do, make her laugh…and make me laugh…and everyone else for that matter. Despite the insane crowd of people for a Sunday, the Getty is an amazing place to shoot an engagement session. We found some really fun nooks and crannies, but two hours just wasn’t enough! I think we all could have done that all day.
A few days after the shoot Kanieka met me to give Amanda and me a gift. It was the most thoughtful thing someone has done for me in a long time and completely made my week!

April & Derrick - Downtown Portland, OR Shoot Continued
Living in California for the last five + years has left me spoiled. I wake up almost every morning to the sun and get to spend my lunch breaks at the beach. It’s the reason I chose to move here and is a huge part of why I stay.
The only time I get a little bummed out is during the holidays. Growing up in Portland trained me to think of winters full of rain (of course), cold temperatures, and the possibility of a few snow days here and there. Just as important as the weather change during the season is the change of wardrobe. My bank account may not miss it, but I love shopping for winter coats, sweaters, and boots. Each season brings a change, more dramatic than LA and sometimes forced change, whether in attire or anything else is nice.
I think that is what inspired me to set up as shoot with April and Derrick while I was home for the holidays. We started the shoot at the beautiful Westin Dowtown Portland then headed to a home in the hills close to my heart. It was fiiireeezing so we hooked April and Derrick up with some piping hot apple cider and lots of whip cream, yum! I was so impressed with these two. They are adorable together and were the perfect pair for my vision of this blustery, winter shoot.

April worked it. Just sayin’

One of my favorites, it’s SO Portland.

January 14, 2010 - 9:26 am - Emily- these are so crisp and framed beautifully. I love the picture where they are by the window and you can see their reflection.
